Dongzhi – Winter Solstice Festival
December 12, 2020 @ 8:00 am - December 21, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
The Chinese Benevolent Association and Chinese Community organizations are excited to announce the upcoming Winter Solstice Festival to celebrate Dongzhi from Edmonton’s Chinatown. It is an online event with a short launch of the Festival on December 12th and will run through the weeks leading up to the actual date of Winter Solstice this year, December 21st. Join us online between December 12th to December 21st as we present a variety of arts and crafts, tongyuan and dumpling making demonstrations, educational talks on Dongzhi, and cultural performances. For program schedules and details, please go to WinterSolsticeYEG.ca.
冬至 Dongzhi (Mandarin) or Dongzi (Cantonese) means “winter’s peak / arrival of winter / extreme of winter”. 過冬至節 (Cantonese) or 过冬至节 (Mandarin) is Winter Solstice Festival in English. Celebration of winter solstice is centuries old and arose out of the tradition of people preparing for colder months ahead on the day of winter solstice. Winter Solstice Festival is celebrated on the shortest day, or the longest night of the year.
Another exciting feature of the Festival is a Winter Solstice Photo Contest. We invite you to send us your best photo of your homemade or home-cooked tongyuan and/or dumplings by you and/or your family for a chance to win wonderful prizes sponsored by Edmonton Chinatown businesses. Visit WinterSolsticeYEG.ca to complete an entry form for a chance to win!
Feel free to help us to promote the Winter Solstice Festival as broadly as possible.
Let’s celebrate Dongzhi (Winter Solstice) together while being apart!
